AI Enablement Lead

Victoria, Australia · Permanent · Hybrid

Job description

The AI Enablement Lead is a senior, hands-on engineer focused on improving Developer Experience. This role is about improving business effectiveness through the smart adoption of existing AI tools, governance, and ways of working, not hands-on AI or LLM implementation.

This role sits within the Engineering function and operates horizontally across squads and platforms. The mission of the role is to make Champion Data’s engineering teams faster, more effective, more consistent, and more cost-efficient through better tooling, smarter workflows, and pragmatic adoption of AI and automation.

This is not a feature-delivery role. It is a force-multiplier role.

The successful candidate will experiment, validate, demonstrate and embed tools, systems and patterns that materially improve how we design, build, test, deploy and operate software. They will champion the efficient utilisation of AI companions (such as GitHub Copilot and emerging tooling), CI/CD improvements in GitLab, AWS developer workflows, local development environments (Visual Studio / VS Code), and cross-stack consistency across .NET and Typescript.

Job requirements

The ideal candidate will demonstrate many of the following:

  • Strong senior-level experience in .NET and modern frontend ecosystems (Typescript)
  • Hands-on experience building and operating production systems in AWS
  • Deep familiarity with Git-based workflows and CI/CD systems (GitLab preferred)
  • A strong understanding of software engineering lifecycle optimisation, including code review practices, testing strategies, automation and release management
  • Practical experience using AI coding assistants (e.g. GitHub Copilot) and enthusiasm for exploring and embedding emerging AI-enabled engineering workflows
  • Comfort building internal tools, scripts, templates or developer utilities that improve team effectiveness
  • Experience analysing and improving engineering flow and delivery practices
  • Strong systems thinking — able to see how tooling, workflow, architecture and team habits interact
  • Clear communicator capable of influencing senior engineers without formal authority
  • A pragmatic mindset — focused on practical impact rather than novelty
  • You are energised by helping other engineers succeed. You enjoy experimentation, but you are disciplined about turning experiments into standards. You measure success by the uplift in others.
  • Prior experience in sports, data platforms, or real-time systems is beneficial but not required.

Job responsibilities

  • Engineering Productivity & Workflow Optimisation: Continuously assess and improve how engineers work day-to-day, identifying friction points across local development, CI/CD, code review, testing, deployment and observability. Design and implement improvements that reduce cycle time and increase flow.
  • AI-Enabled Engineering: Champion practical, measurable use of AI tools across the department. Experiment with emerging AI-assisted development platforms and agentic workflows, demonstrate real-world usage patterns, and embed effective practices into everyday engineering.
  • Dev Tooling & Platform Standards: Design and evolve internal development standards, templates, scaffolds and reusable patterns across .NET Core, frontend frameworks and AWS infrastructure. Promote consistency without stifling innovation.
  • CI/CD & Automation Excellence: Enhance GitLab pipelines, branching strategies and release workflows to improve reliability, feedback speed and deployment confidence. Drive automation-first thinking across build, test and deployment processes.
  • Developer Experience Strategy: Actively gather feedback from engineers to understand friction, blockers and inefficiencies. Translate these insights into actionable improvements, pilots and structured rollouts.
  • Proof-of-Concept & Experimentation: Rapidly prototype new tools, plugins, scripts or internal platforms that improve developer effectiveness. Validate ideas in practice before broader adoption.
  • Knowledge Sharing & Enablement: Demonstrate new tools and approaches through internal sessions, documentation and practical walkthroughs. Create clear guidance so improvements are sustainable and scalable.
  • Cloud-Native Efficiency: Work closely with engineering teams to improve AWS usage patterns from a developer perspective,  including local testing, environment parity, infrastructure-as-code workflows and cost awareness.
  • Engineering Metrics & Insight: Partner with Engineering Leadership to define and observe meaningful indicators of engineering health (e.g. deployment frequency, cycle time, rework, operational overhead) and target improvements through DevEx initiatives.
  • Continuous Learning & Industry Awareness: Stay current with evolving DevEx practices, AI-assisted development tools and modern engineering workflows. Proactively assess which innovations are signal versus noise, and introduce what genuinely adds value.
